Are you looking for a fun sport that maxes out your step count? A sport that takes you through beautiful countryside, that you can play alone or with your friends at any time of the year? What about a sport that is low-impact and practically free to play? Polish up your fairway shots and your rollers, practice your straddle puts and your grips, and head to one of Shenandoah County’s disc golf courses.

Limestone Ledges

Limestone Ledges is the jewel of Shenandoah County’s disc golf scene. Located in Shenandoah County Park in Maurertown, the complex boasts three different courses and replaces the former Signal View course. The variety of courses (and tee options on each hole) allows play by all levels of player, from beginner to expert. There’s even a putting green so you can warm up before you hit the tees.

  • Families and beginners will like the 18-hole Lower Forest course. Its relatively short length and proximity to parking makes it a good bet for those who are just starting out or developing stamina.
  • More seasoned players should try the Upper Meadows course for a heightened challenge.
  • Experts will be drawn to the challenging Massanutten Monster course, a PDGA Gold-level experience. 

Follow your afternoon at Limestone Ledges with a stop at Ridge Runner Tap House. Named for those who have farmed the Valley for centuries, this tap house serves up craft beer and lite fare like cheese platters and grilled sandwiches. Sit inside or outside and enjoy the view. The tap house welcomes kids and dogs, and you can even book a stay in the onsite cottage or guest suite.

Bryce Resort

While the slopes at Bryce Resort are reserved for skiers and snowboarders in the winter, they open in the summer for mountain bikers and those pursuing other downhill activities. How about riding the lift to the top of the mountain and playing a 9-hole round of disc golf on your walk back to the bottom? The scenery is phenomenal, and nothing beats a mountainside you don’t need to climb. No discs? No problem. You can rent them for just a few dollars as part of your lift package.

Bryce Resort has several dining options that are open in the summer. Sit down at the Copper Kettle for lunch or dinner. The menu features starters, sandwiches, burgers, and meals for kids. Watch the event calender for upcoming live entertainment in the bar. Try the outdoor bar and grill, Carter’s Hütte, and look for the Express Grill to open soon.

Swover Creek Farms

Swover Creek Farms is known for its craft beer and food, but you can also play an awesome round of disc golf here. The well-maintained 18-hole course winds for 1,903 feet through the woods and over farmland and is open to the public free of charge. It’s even kid and dog-friendly! Get a map of the site (or use the uDisc app, PDGA website, or discgolfscene.com). Though no alcohol is permitted on the course, there’s plenty of space to relax after the round for a refreshing craft brew or two as well as wood-fired pizza and sausages on pretzel buns.
