As spring sweeps across Shenandoah County, the region’s vibrant arts scene blossoms along with the changing season. April offers the perfect opportunity to explore our local art community, which draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the area, the rich culture of our community, and the diverse talents of local artisans. Whether you're a lifelong art enthusiast or someone simply looking for a fresh and inspiring way to spend a day, there’s no better time than now to dive into the artistic offerings of Shenandoah County.

One standout event this spring is “Birds on the Bends” at Muse Vineyards, held on April 6. This celebration of art, music, and nature brings together the beauty of the natural world with the creativity of local artists. Visitors can explore a bird-inspired art show and participate in birdwatching tours, giving them a chance to connect with the landscape and the art in a much more personal way. Muse is a great place to visit year-round, thanks to its rotating gallery exhibits, which highlight the work of local artists.

Just a short drive away, VECCA (Valley Educational Center for the Creative Arts) offers a rotating array of exhibitions throughout the year, with something fresh to experience every time you visit. The current exhibition, “Constructed Worlds: Art from Fantasy and Fiction,” invites visitors into the realms of artists’ imaginations, where art takes on a life of its own. VECCA features one artist each month, giving that person the opportunity to showcase an entire wall of their work. There are also exhibition artists whose pieces you can find here year-round. It’s the perfect place to see a diverse range of art styles and mediums, all while supporting locals and their work.

For those looking to engage more directly with the creative process this spring, The Art Spot and Studio Sasquatch offer hands-on and DIY experiences during which you can try your hand at everything from pottery to painting. Specializing in the paint-and-sip events that everyone loves, The Art Spot allows participants to unwind while exploring their creativity. On the other end of the spectrum, Studio Sasquatch offers a truly unique art experience. More than just a traditional art studio, it’s an immersive, creative “playground” where you can let your inner artist play. Though they have a physical location opening soon in Woodstock, for now, they bring the studio to you.

Another unique aspect of the county’s arts scene is the collaborative work of Ellen Flugel and Jaz Draper, the artists behind many of the stunning mosaic tile murals found throughout the region. Their works, including murals at Shenandoah River State Park and other local landmarks, offer a colorful glimpse into our county’s beauty.

If you’re in the mood for a more leisurely art experience, take a walk through downtown Strasburg, where a collection of public murals adds a unique sense of beauty to the streets. These murals offer a perfect backdrop for a stroll through downtown.

This area is also home to several talented artisans whose works reflect the essence of the region. Kary Haun, a local potter, crafts beautiful ceramics that are available at various local galleries and markets. Her pottery is both functional and artistic, making it the perfect souvenir or addition to your home.

Also contributing to the area’s art scene is Rachel Fitzsimmons, a local muralist whose work can be seen at the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce. Her vibrant murals combine bold colors and intricate designs, bringing new life to the spaces they inhabit.

August Hoerr is another local artist whose work has garnered attention in the community. August’s pieces, which can be viewed at augusthoerr.com or through his Instagram page, @augusthoerrart, explore themes of the natural world and human expression. August is also an active member of the VECCA board, which helps him ensure that Shenandoah County remains a vibrant place for artists to thrive.

In Shenandoah County, art is not just something to view, it’s something to experience. It offers a wonderful way to connect with the community and celebrate the beautiful changes the new season brings with it.
