A bed upstage left is surrounded by curtains. A man (Scrooge) enters in
bedclothes with a candle and climbs in bed for the night. As he gets into the bed actors/narrators enter unseen to him. Without acknowledging the narrators, Scrooge sets the candle on a shelf or table and closes the curtain. The actors/narrators each have a candle and hold it up to his/her face and address the audience in turn…..
And the play begins….
“Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatsoever about that.. Old Marley
was dead as a doornail. Scrooge and he were partners for many years, and Scrooge was
his sole executor, his sole friend, and his sole mourner. But, even on the day of Marley’s
funeral, he was an excellent man of business, an excellent man of business even in tough
times… When men saw meager fortunes collapse… and fathers found it difficult to pro-
vide for their families. A time when charities and churches found it difficult to aid those
in need. Scrooge, saving every penny he could, never even painted out Marley’s name from
the sign above the door. No matter the sign. Let there be no doubt that Marley was dead.
Or nothing the story we are about to relate would seem as wonderful.”
